Department of Biology, which was established in 1999, became operational in 2000 with the inauguration of the 4 founding faculty members. The department started its educational activities for the first time at the undergraduate level with a total of 32 students during the 2001-2002 academic year. The department, which has adopted the culture of quality, was accredited by FEDEK for 5 years between 27 December 2014 and 27 December 2019. Currently, there are 129 undergraduate students, 4 of whom are preparatory students, registered in the department. 23 of these students are international students (8 Turkmenistan, 6 Iraq, 4 Syria, 1 Azerbaijan, 1 Iran, 1 Egypt, 1 Somalia, and 1 Albania). In addition, a graduate program with a thesis was started on 8 December 2000, a doctorate program on 15 August 2005, and non-thesis master's programs on 5 August 2015, under the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, and these programs are still active. In addition, in 2019, the 100% English Master's program was initiated. There are 18 graduate students in total, including 10 for the doctorate, 6 for the master's degree with thesis, and 2 for the master's without thesis.

The department has 1 student laboratory, 2 lecture halls, 1 classroom, 9 research laboratories, and 1 Bryophyte Herbarium (ZNG). In addition, the remote education center and faculty computer classrooms are available for the department's lectures. There are 9 offices belonging to department lecturers.

In the current staff, a total of 11 Turkish nationals, including 5 Professors, 1 Associate Professors, 3 Doctoral Faculty Members, and 2 research assistants, work full-time. In addition, there is 1 foreign national Doctor Lecturer as contracted personnel. These lecturers continue their education and research activities. There is a department secretary as administrative staff.
